Internal Family Systems
What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?
Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS therapy) offers a powerful, compassionate approach to healing trauma and emotional overwhelm. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS is a non-pathologizing, evidence-based model that helps you connect with the different parts of yourself — including protective parts that manage anxiety and reactive parts shaped by past wounds. Instead of fighting against your thoughts or feelings, IFS helps you access your core Self — the calm, confident center within you — so healing can unfold naturally. Internal Family Systems is widely used for trauma recovery, attachment wounds, shame, depression, and relationship challenges, anxiety, and is a great fit for religious trauma as well, making it one of the most sought-after modern therapy approaches.
How does IFS work?
Through Internal Family Systems therapy you’ll be invited to get curious about the parts of yourself that show up in ways you don’t understand or don’t like. Instead of treating them as a problem, IFS can help you build a relationship with these parts and learn about why they started to do these jobs, and the wounded, exiled parts of you that they protect. As you build these relationships with your inner family, you gain more and more access to the compassionate and courageous core of who you are. From this place of true Self IFS can enable you to offer the compassionate witnessing and inner resources to the conflicted parts you yourself that can bring true healing and more inner peace and harmony.
